From Grand Landscapes to Intimate Scenes: Mastering focus with your Digital Camera
Part Field / Part Virtual Workshop
Location: Saturday – Nevada City, CA @ Edward’s Crossing on the Yuba River,
Sunday – Via the web on Zoom
Level: Intermediate to Advanced. Participants should have a firm grasp of how to operate their cameras, including an understanding of aperture, depth of field and exposure.
Group Maximum: 10
Do you struggle with getting sharp images – particularly in your landscape photography? Always wonder why your background is sharp, but foreground unsharp, even though you understand aperture? Have you tried to understand lens theories like hyperfocal distance; tried to use distance charts, and yet still come away confused? If you answered YES to any of these questions, I can help you!
Day One: Field. This portion of the workshop is designed to give you a hands-on experience improving focus with your digital SLR. You will learn quick, accurate ways – in the field – to get sharp images without using charts or apps. I will help bring the sharpness of your photos to the next level! The topics covered include:
- Choosing Auto vs. Manual focus
- 1/3 – 2/3 rule for focus
- hyperfocal distance
- using the distance indicator (a.k.a. focus scale) on your lens to obtain hyperfocal distance
- activating the depth of field preview button to ensure sharpness prior to pressing the shutter.
- quick methods for hyperfocal distance if you don’t have a distance indicator
- Demonstration of field technique for discovering the sharpest aperture in your lens
Participants should have a firm grasp of how to operate their cameras, including an understanding of aperture, depth of field and exposure.
Day Two: Via Zoom. I’ll re-introduce the focusing methods covered in Saturday’s field session and help answer any questions that came up. I’ll also show in Lightroom how to use the images in the field demo to decipher the sharpest aperture in your lens.
Tuition: $260.00
